Mahindra Scorpio-N Safety Shock: From 5 Stars at GNCAP to 0 Stars at ANCAP

In a shocking turn of events, Mahindra & Mahindra’s Scorpio-N has faced a significant setback in safety ratings, dropping from an impressive 5 stars at the Global New Car Assessment Program (GNCAP) to a dismal 0 stars at the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

The absence of an autonomous emergency braking system and lane support system stands out as the primary reason behind the SUV’s poor performance at ANCAP. The testing protocols and safety feature requirements differ between ANCAP and GNCAP, leading to varying ratings for the same vehicle.

The Mahindra Scorpio, launched in Australia and New Zealand in 2023, applies the ANCAP safety rating to all its variants. While the Scorpio is available as a six-seat vehicle in Australia, a seven-seat variant is offered in New Zealand, according to ANCAP.

Mahindra, in an official statement, emphasized its commitment to safety, citing the Scorpio-N’s earlier achievement as the first body-on-frame SUV in India to secure a 5-star safety rating under GNCAP’s new crash test protocols.

However, the ANCAP assessment scores reveal the Scorpio’s challenges:

  • Adult occupant protection: 17.67 out of 40 (44%)
  • Child occupant protection: 39.27 out of 49 (80%)
  • Vulnerable road user protection: 14.94 out of 63 (23%)
  • Safety assist: 0.00 out of 18 (0%)

The SUV is equipped with standard airbags but lacks crucial safety features, contributing to its low safety assist score. Notably, the absence of autonomous emergency braking and lane support systems has been a major drawback.

ANCAP further highlighted issues like lap-only seatbelts and the lack of a driver monitoring system, speed limit information function, and child presence detection. The organization strongly advises against transporting young children in certain seating positions due to safety concerns.

As Mahindra works towards meeting evolving safety regulations, the Scorpio-N’s plunge in safety ratings serves as a cautionary tale, urging manufacturers to prioritize comprehensive safety features to ensure the well-being of occupants.
