This move marks Corning’s inaugural entry into the Indian market. Initially slated for Telangana, the company’s decision to choose Tamil Nadu is attributed to its strategic proximity to other Apple suppliers like Foxconn and Pegatron. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) for this groundbreaking venture is anticipated to be signed at the Global Investor Meet (GIM) scheduled for January.
According to ET’s sources, the construction of the factory is estimated to take a year. This development aligns with Corning’s global reputation for innovation in glass technology and positions Tamil Nadu as a crucial player in the technological landscape.
In a related development, a joint venture between Corning and Optiemus Infracom is set to establish India’s first high-quality finished smartphone cover glass factory. Named Bharat Innovation Glass (BIG), the facility aims to commence operations by the end of 2024. The joint venture has already sought support from the central government under the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electronic Components and Semiconductors (SPECS), highlighting the commitment to boosting domestic manufacturing.
As Corning ventures into the Indian market, this strategic move is not only poised to contribute to technological innovation but is also expected to have a significant economic impact, creating job opportunities and fostering growth. Stay tuned for updates as this transformative venture unfolds.
